Dead agave

Although agaves are known for their longevity, they bloom once in a lifetime and then die. To see the whole living plant click on this summer post and tell me how can I enjoy winter!? :-) This is not a b&w photo... (click for a better view)

I do prefer the summer pictures, but photographically speaking this is still a good picture.

Let's hope we quickly go back to the summer tones...blue sky... and green foliage!!!
That is quite sad for a tree to bloom and die..

Such a contrast between the summer picture and this one. I would have thought the winter one was in B&W.

Your neutral photos, that are not black and white, like this one, are brilliant!

I do so appreciate your kind comments on my blog, and all the more so, knowing that you are not writing in your native language. :)

I can't believe this isn't done in b&w, amazing. What a sad life for the agave. Love both photos, the summer and the winter shots :)

Strange plant, but interesting to learn about.

winter seems all to long. The trick is to find winter's beauty.

Wow, I really thought it was black and white. You must be having some really gray weather.

i can't believe that this photo is not black and white. such grey weather. The comparison with the summer photo is rather remarkable. Such vibrant blue water with this beautiful stalk growing and spreading its seeds. And BTW, I can't believe you do not have a golden barrel cactus. they are the best!

I am sure that Julie will be showing some agave on her Scottsdale Daily Photo site in the future as we have lots of them in our yard and she is always very sad when they send out the tall stalk that signifies their uppcoming death.

Fortunately, before they die they usually send out lots of shoots or runners that pop up new agaves. We cut off the runners and transplant them. At times we will have 10 or so new plants growing in the area where the old one died.

Our favorite is the variegated agave, which has two colors of green in the leaves.

They are a remarkable genetic adaptation to dry areas, as the leaves cathc the rain and channel the drops down the leaves to the central stalk. Very little water is wasted by hitting the ground.

At first look, I though that it was a black and white image. By the way, I browsed your other blogs and found some excellent images.

It must have died due to some extreme weather condition. I saw the blooming agaves in your summer post. It's so picturesque.

But there is such a thing as toooo hot. It's been like that here lately but has come on really cool and rainy the past couple of days. Hope you get some sunshine soon. I didn't know that agave only flowered once.

It's such a gentle beauty and just show how natural images look best.
