In exile

King Umberto II of Italy lived for 37 years in this house facing the Atlantic Ocean at Cascais. He came to Portugal during WWII and was never allowed to return to his country.
He died in 1983 and the house is now part of the complex of the Grande Real Villa Italia Hotel, next to Boca do Inferno (Hell's Mouth - check this post).

How did he feel, I wonder, living in such a place, knowing he could never return to his real home.

Wonnnderful Villa it may be, but not being with the family is painful even if you are living in such a palace.

How sad for him, that he could never return to his home country. Wonderful post.

Nice house, not much compared with a kingdom... The rest is history.

He obviously came with a little money in hand. This is a grand place.

Those are wonderful buildings.
Especially, the building in second photo is splendid and has beautiful color.

What a grand place or would you say palace.

I love the storks along the Tagus. You should show pics of them. MB

I'll take that kind of exile any day! ;^)

Oh I wonder if his spirit wanders the grounds & haunts the place?!!! I'm a sucker for a good ghost story!

Thanks for the add too!

A bit small for a King, but I guess he had to do with it...

I've seen worse digs than this for an exile. He could have done a lot worse. Nice pad.

Splendid buildings. If you've got to go into exile, this is probably a good choice.

There are certainly worse places for an exile! ... and now the Royal family is allowed back again! Too late for him of course...

Hell's Mouth looked beautiful. it is a sad story to never be able to return home but at least it was a great location. Thanks for the history. In answer to your questions, you are right. A Saguaro does not make a good balcony cactus. Although the double breasted saguaro is a good balcony plant. I have a pretty good size one on a pot on my patio and you would like the look of it. They are on the rarer side though.

Marvellous place. I can only imagine the inside of the villa.

It's fun to travel but horrible to think you could never go home. I guess there are many refugees caught in that misery today.
