Restored Pillory
Downtown Oeiras
The City Hall building stands in the background
*
P.S. Pillory is the english word for the portuguese 'pelourinho'. It consists of a stone column where people were tied for public punishment and humiliation. You can see them at the main square of almost all old towns in Portugal (and Brazil). Despite the awful practice, some of them are truly beautiful stone works.
However if you look for the english definition of pillory you'll find: "a device formerly used for publicly punishing offenders consisting of a wooden frame with holes in which the head and hands can be locked".

Quinta do Barão
The old Quinta do Barão (Baron's Farm) was famous for its wine. It has been cut by roads and roundabouts in the last decades and no longer works. There is a project to transform the manor and other buildings, gardens and the remaining terrains next to these into a luxury resort, including a Wine Museum in the cellars.
However it was supposed to open doors in 2009 and nothing happened...

Contrast (IV)
Oeiras and environs used to be a farm area until the 20th century, so I believe there must have been a farm here once before the concrete invasion. Now the old house and chapel at Sassoeiros are literally surrounded by ugly buildings (it was quite common for wealthy families to have their own chapel).

Decay - Museum of Popular Art
This site was created for the Portuguese World Exhibition in 1940 but the building was remodelled to house the museum eight years later.
Believe it or not it was closed in 2003 and has remained abandoned since then!
Restoration works are now taking place inside and (hopefully!) it will open doors again soon.

July Theme Day: Reflections
Memorial to those who have died fighting in the abhorrent Colonial War that lasted for thirteen years thanks to Salazar's dictatorship.
The fort walls in the background are covered with the countless names of the soldiers who lost their lives between 1961 and 1974
