AGMPRISMA and Ciel: As I have had the chance to see most of my favourite animals in the wild, I'm not particularly fond of zoos. However, I'm glad they exist when it comes to species already extinct in the wild and such is the case of the Scimitar-Horned Oryx I've previously posted: http://oeirasdailyphoto.blogspot.pt/2012/03/extinct-in-wild.html
These are awesome, JM! I'm not really fond of zoos either, but I'm glad the animals are being protected so that we can continue to enjoy their beauty. So many of those in the wild are being killed in one way or another -- mostly by humans and I do hate that! The tiger looks close enough to touch and I love it! Have a great week!
Great photos, JM. I'm like the others . . . in an ideal world, these unique animals would be in the wild, but zoos do have an important role in preserving endangered animals. Also, not everyone is as fortunate as you and I have been to see them in their natural environments. Good zoos let many people see them, who will never go to Africa or Asia.
All very good photos but the last one is brilliant. I've seen a lot of alligators in the wild in the US and in Costa Rica. I prefer not to get closer tan a telephoto lens will take me.
There are good zoos and there are bad zoos. Since I know you passionately care about these animals from the wild, I can only conclude Lisbon's is a good one. The face of the rhino grabs me in a primitive way.

A terrific portrait of a handsome animal...I can even see his eyelashes. Great job!
Fotos imprresionantes para unos animales impresionantes, no me gustan los zoos pero a veces son importantes su misión.
Un salduo y feliz semana.
These are fantastic. The bottom shot is quite abstract and I love the splash of water in the middle shot.
That first one is 'biting'. Be careful. hahaha
Great pics. And I also like the old map in your header. Shows me just where Oeiras is.
What a beautiful tiger!!
BTW, I'm hoping to come to Lisboa in June 2013!
Part of me thinks they shouldn't be in a zoo and part of me thinks at least nothing is going to happen to them there... Gorgeous JM.

Excellent! Wonderful images!
Excellent. I really have to go back to the zoo here.
You have captured the sadness of that young tiger so well. To see someone so wild and so beautiful confined, always pulls at my heartstrings.

These are exciting, wonderful shots.
I find zoos sad but I'm sadder still at the plight of so many animals in the wild.
Great close-ups of these wonderful wild animals!
