It is indeed a festive way to pay tribute to the dead. I enjoyed similar celebrations in Mexico and Spain when I lived there. Terrific, colorful captures, JM!
I did not know that she was a photographer as well - have to look this up. We visited her and Rivera's home in Mexico City once, now her museum. It's spectacular.
Uma exposiçao interessante cheia de ótimos detalhes e cores , spots pra fotografar e suas fotos estão maravilhosas.Adorei o primeiro detalhe! :) abraços Léia
I love Dia de los Muertos. There's a big Dia de los Muertos festival at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery every year around Halloween and it's wonderful, but so popular it is quite overcrowded. Still, it's not to be missed.
I like Frida, and I like this as a museum exhibit. But ...
I don't think it brings me closer to the mysteries of death and dying. I don't think it represents the true nature of death. Acutally, for me, it more represents our false approach to death as we try to deny its essential truth. There is a massive dichotomy here, isn;t there. Death dressed to kill!

Seeing a colorful skull--a first for me!
I really enjoy these images. I think it's nice that people pay tribute to the dead in festive and colorful ways.

Those devils are amazing. Such a colourful festivity.
Groovy!
I think that show is coming here in the fall - or another similar show. I can hardly wait!
He he, that's me in the third pic, lol. That's how I feel tonight! :)
The Day of the Dead must be an exotic feast of bright colour! Incredible figurines in the first photo!
It's a great way of demystifying death and making it part of everyday life... Great shots, Jose!
A little different type of party as we have.
Beautifull colorfull, but a bit terrible and scurry.. :)

Sounds fascinating... and looks wonderful.
My favorite holiday, I am a very big collector of Dia de Los Muertos folk art. Love seeing these.
This is awesome. You can find it all over town here.
I think I am going to have nightmares . . .

Nicely shot, but creepy!
this is a tradition that I really like, welcoming back the spirits of the departed. Would like to see it.

@Bob: I also visited Frida's Blue House in Coyoacán, it's fantastic!
I don't know if these are gruesome or funny!
Beautiful!
Herding Cats
Day of the Dead was a more common event in California. I can't see marigolds without thinking of it as they are a big part of the altars I've seen.
Interesting post and very colourful.
No mournfulness at this Day of the Dead altar! Viva los Muertes! ;-P That must have been one incredible photo exhibition!

Arrr. Day of the Dead celebrations. I have a full leg / thigh tattoo commemorating this festival. Stunning images.
So you have Dia de los Muertos traditions in Portugal too? That's interesting. None of that in France.
@Nathalie: No, we haven't, this is just an exhibition. :-)
Never has a skull looked so pretty JM!!
