Lisbon was conquered to the Moors in 1147 and the church was built a few years later; several transformations took place over the centuries until its destruction after the Great Earthquake in 1755. Reconstruction started in 1768.
The building was damaged in 1969 after another earthquake - which I clearly remember! - and it had to be restored as we see it now.

It's tres magnifique with those soaring arches and alcoved statuary! I like that wee crucifix way up top in the center. Not a particularly warm place, though.

Yesterday, I was in line at the local American Express office to pick up some Euros for and upcoming trip. The man ahead of me in line was on his way to Portugal next week. I hope he gets to see this church!

The 1755 Great Earthquake must have been a humdinger JM, so much destruction. I wonder if the 1768 reconstruction was very much different from the original 1147 church? I can only imagine, and hope to never find out, what it must be like to experience an earthquake.
p.s. the word 'yummier' definitely exists JM, well it does in my house anyway haha!
@PerthDP: I'm sure it's very different. The original building must have had that intimidating dark Middle Ages look.
You may have missed the CDP bakeries theme but this church is a true confection! The ceiling looks like something imagined by a wildly ambitious baker. What a glorious place!
And aren't earthquakes are memorable! I rode out quite a few in the San Francisco area, terrified every second.
Awesome church and amazing history, as so many of the churches in Europe do! Being from such a young country, I'm always amazed by the buildings/churches and history! And it is just one of the reasons I so enjoy your posts and photos! Thank you, JM!!

Magnificent. The color scheme is unusual too. Stone takes on a whole new meaning when I visit your blog! You really captured the soaring nature of the interior as I'm sure the designers and artists intended to inspire such high emotions. It must take your breath away to walk inside such an interior...
