I wonder how old those cobblestones are? Is this street even wide enough for one vehicle? I presume people who live in this area do not own automobiles. Where would they park them?
@Kathy: This is the area where the Moors have been confined after the conquest of Lisbon in 1147. Of course both the buildings and cobblestones are not that old, but I can't tell you how old they really are because this district was severely damaged after the 1775 Earthquake but didn't collapse. It's a poor neighbourhood mainly inhabited by immigrants and, yes, I believe they don't own cars.
Superb captures of those narrow, old streets, JM! I have to admit I get a feeling of claustrophobia just looking at them, but I'm fascinated at the same time. Terrific post as always! Hope you've had a great weekend!
Beautiful shots, but I don't think I'd care to wander in such tight quarters.
That isn't one of those odd temple-ish spots at the top of the stairs in the first shot, is it? I'm thinking of the ones you captured a couple of months ago that someone thought might be linked to witchcraft?

These streets are certainly narrow. I love the way they curve and climb.
love the composition of that final shot.
magnifiques petites ruelles tres pitoresque ;o)
All three are unique despite having a common flow. I'd hate to try walking there on high heels!
I love to walk streets like that, to find hidden secretive and magical places.
Great pictures. Love them.
Enjoy your day.
great pictures of a beautiful part of Lisbon... I really like that last picture and I love the second...

Call it narrow!
God bless you!

Wow - these shots are spectacular! Love the light on the streets - they seem to secretive and inviting.
So beautiful! Reminds me of Italy. :)
love the cobblestones!!!
Notwithstanding the history, this is a perfect setting for the Portuguese version of Jack the Ripper! :-)

@Ciel: Absolutely! LOL! Can you imagine this place at night? I don't! :-)
Impressive and picturesque...
Fantastic to see... lovely images.
Estas ruas tão estreitas, sem dúvida sinônimo de antiguidade.
i like these narrow streets :)
Spectacular! I love the cobblestone walkways and the steps are visually very interesting. Lots of great details.
Narrow alleyways like this are fun, because we don't know in advance what we will find when we exit the other end.
Beautiful shots, but I don't think I'd care to wander in such tight quarters.

Everywhere in Europe has twisted, narrow streets. Nowhere in the US does.
There is an interesting article about Lisbon in the travel section of today's New York Times. Hope the link works:

@Kay: Yes, it is! What a fantastic memory! :-)
What gorgeous, gorgeous narrow streets.
These narrow streets are so full of character JM, cobblestones, the beautiful pale colours and even intriguing stairways, a photographers dream!
These are wonderful. I am sure they are better in person.
The lines of perspective are enchanting.
Only in Europe can tight quarters be seen as charming. Great photos, JM.
Beautiful details in these narrow little roads.
Ihana kapea katu !
Fabulous shots!
