The Great Earthquake occurred in 1755, during the reign of King José I. After the reconstruction of the city, a statue of the king was placed in the center of the largest square next to the Tagus River.

And amazing place. The square is huge. I like the fact you put people in and about the statue and the square so we get an idea of scale...did you have to pay them much? :-)

@Cathy: It's a common shot I've just cropped. I'll have to try taking a panoramic photo of the whole square, but, actually, it didn't occur to me... :-)))

The status is huge, but it looks so small when put in perspective, the square is enormous and meticulously clean.

I remember visiting this square.
The teller in the bank near our house in Arizona introduced himself to me as "Jose," but he pronounced the J as a J, not an H as one would expect. When I commented upon his pronunciation, he said that his mother was Brazilian, and that he pronounced his name as it is said in Portugese.
Who would think one might learn something new about Portugal from a visit to a local bank in Scottsdale.

There is some ornate stonework on some of the nearby buildings. This is a huge square.

The grand expanse of second image reminds me of Canaletto's paintings of the piazzas in Venice, which I adore. I just saw one at the Getty Center in L.A. last week. How awesome you have the real deal.

Yes indeed, King Jose I had a lot to deal with, but as you show us on a daily basis JM he did a splendid job of it!
