I never knew the story behind this cross at Parede but one thing is for sure, someone died on these cliffs long ago.

Someone very significant I think JM, what a wonderful spot looking out to sea. The cross is bearing up well considering it must take the full force of the sea winds.
We have many stone crosses like this around France, but I am led to believe that many of them are were built so that there was somewhere for pilgrims to stop and pray. Diane
I just returned to the apartment after a long walk on the beach here in California. I just was thinking about how treacherous those rocks along the oceans edge must have been for ships 100 years ago or more.
Yes, this reminds me of the bunches of flowers that mourners leave beside the site of a car accident nowadays. I do like the light you have captured with this one, Jose.
Such a solid memorial. Going by the size of this, I wonder if it may be even a memorial to the tragic loss of more than one life! Could it mark a shipwreck?
What a stunning image! Taken at perhaps the perfect time of day with all the elements - light, water, rough rocks and a mysterious cross - coming together to make a truly memorable shot. Wow!

Stunning light and textures
belle composition et surtout une belle lumiere qui tombe sur ce paysage
This is a stark but lovely symbol, reminding us of our own mortality.
Talvez algum barco aqui encalhou!
.. and someone has put up a cross.
A truly impressive image.

Stark, but beautiful and very moving. It would be interesting to know the story behind it. Wonderful capture for the day as always, JM!
It is refreshing to see a dignified memorial carved in stone. So many times, one only sees a hastily built temporary memorial.

The lighting is really excellent!
I love the light in this photo!
beautiful!
I love it and your shot!
It's a beautiful landscape..
Just breathtaking!
Or is it a calvary?
Beautiful shot - such nice light.
A beautiful place to stop and reflect, I should think. I love the way the golden light on the cross is magnified by the warm light on the horizon.

Fascinating visual representation of tragedy! 'Tis a mystery, too. One could write a short story using this as a central theme.
I like how your photo shows off the rugged beauty of the cross -- very nice!
I agree with Kate on this one.
Beautiful golden hour color. The image has a lonely, even forsaken feeling.
That's a beautiful memorial.

Interesting. Gorgeous picture. Is there anyway to find out the reason behind the cross.
Beneath Thy Feet
This would be a most beautiful final resting place.
What a lovely composition it has made, shame you do not know the history.

Wow, Great panorama shot!
did a piece on the top break off?
we have a stainless steel cross on top of our volcazno. This is an area of Bible strip.
This a spectacular shot!!! I love love love it!!!!
Beautiful in its worn simplicity.
I hadn't heard of the meme Taphophile Tragics meme. Though I've largely given up the photo memes, this one may be right up my alley. ;-)
Great shot, by the way. Perfect for the theme...the Portuguese are very dramatic about death and dying.
