I have been to Lisbon, but did not know there is a district named Alcantara. The Music Director of the Phoenix Symphony in the 1970's and early 1980's was Maestro Theo Alcantara. Maybe his family was from there.
@Dave: All names starting with "al" come from the Arabic, from the times of the Moorish occupation of the Iberian Peninsula (8th to 12th/13th centuries). The gentleman you mention may have Portuguese or Spanish (or even Arab?) origins.
Such a graphic contrast between old and new in this image JM. I like the way you've composed the shot with the ornate lamp close to the front and the old tower to the back, the overhead freeway is a brilliant touch.
Maybe it is just your fine photography, but it looks like the architects of the new structure on the right took into account the size and style of the classical building on the left. The choice to show your image in black and white works here.

Lovely graphic shot, perfect for B&W. Is that a road bridge way up there?
@Perth DP and Jenny: It's the "25th of April" Bridge and the railroad (darker structure below) that connects both banks of the Tagus River estuary.
