Queen Mary II National Theatre

Rossio Square, Lisbon

The theatre was built on the site of the old Estaus Palace(*) between 1842 and 1846. A fire would partially destroy the building in 1964 and it took fourteen years to reopen doors.

(*)built around 1450, it became the seat of the Inquisition in the 16th century; the palace survived the 1755 Great Earthquake but it was destroyed by a fire in 1836

The building is nice but I can't help but notice the great pavement.

It is creepy to think of the first building housing the Inquisition.
The present theatre looks pleasant and the wavy tile pattern adds to it.
May it never know earthquakes or fires again.

Such a beautiful building. It's hard to imagine a building like that being consumed by fire.
Sorry to hear about your mother but, so happy she is doing better now. Tell her I'm sending my best wishes from Arizona in the US.

I love this pavement. The theater looks grand, also.

Such a lovely old building, but with a spooky history where the inquisition is concerned. I love the wonderful stone work that is so prevalent in Portugal! Wonderful capture as always, JM! I do hope your mother is doing much better and gets to come home soon!!

Beautiful! The pavements are so amazing in Lisbon I'd have trouble looking up!

Sorry to hear your mother has been sick! I know how hard that can be for both of you. I hope she recovers fully, and soon. Best wishes to you both.

It's a beautiful building but shudder, the Inquisition! Am totally taken by the wavy tiles and love the way you shot the scene to enhance them for full effect!
