I love the Bairro Alto district which will actually be celebrating its 500th anniversary this year. However, I wonder how much nicer it would be if a disgusting scene like this would simply not exist there.
I do hate to see the tile work being destroyed and the trash and graffiti are disgusting! Makes you wonder why people do this sort of thing???? Unfortunately, we seem to see this sort of thing all over the world these days! A sad, but great capture, JM.
Looks like some remodeling is going on. . .some places give credit or at least collect old toilets if the new ones going in conserve water. I think the porcelain is recycled, into road paving or something like that.
It looks like despair, the actions of people who are so numb, uncaring or poor that the condition of their street is meaningless to them. Excellent photojournalism.

I do like the first half of the photo, then I saw toilet bowl..
Looks like they need a dumpster.
The tile and graffiti would look very interesting without the presence of a toilet.
Doi no coraçao ver um abandono assim... :(

Gosh!:(
Oh my, this certainly is a mess that needs to be cleaned up.
Fewer photo ops though!
To let you know . . . now Blogger / Google has re-organised photo storage, I've gone back to posting daily at Message in a Milk Bottle

instead of M2.
Perhaps you might like to follow the photos there?

Let's just think it was trash pickup day, and everything will be off the street by nightfall!
Oh, there is trash, dirt and misery enough.
very sad.
Garbage seems to be a problem everywhere!
However it is better in a picture than IRL ;)

We probably all have decayed and messy places like this in our cities.
That's a lot of trash.

Nothing like a pile of old toilets!
Ugh. I hate smelly rubbish.
I think Jack may be right JM, you will find sights like this in most cities.
Really interesting!
A masterpiece in its own way, I feel sadly at home looking at this!
