Forte de São Julião da Barra

Dating from 1553, this fortress is considered to be the greatest coastal defense building in Portugal.
During the french invasion, Napoleon troops occupied it on the year of 1807, but british allies have conquered it one year later and in 1809 the fortress was again on portuguese hands.
Nowadays it is the official residence of the Minister of Defense.

Very impressive fortress! This is the first time I've seen a fortress right at the water's edge — I find it fascinating. But a fortress as a residence? LOL, I don't think I'd like that at all! Little natural sunlight! ;)

Very beautiful fort! And you did a spectacular job by capturing the splash of those waves! Just like Intramuros here in the Philippines built by the spaniards hundreds of years ago. it also faces the MAnila Bay.

Mabuhay from the philippines!

Hilda, the photos show only a small part of the fortress... it is huge, there is even a big swimming pool out there! That's why our ministers allways look so suntanned! lol!

Thank you all for stopping by.

So the conversation went something like this then:

- I need a proper, robust residence
- Yes, Minister!

I was wondering what had happened to the fort and then you tell me the Minister of Defense lives there. That's more than ironic. What is the white building in the first photo?

Per, sometimes politicians are so ridiculous they really make us remember the fantastic BBC comic series! :-)

Mirage2g, I think I've only done the skywatch thing once, because I don't remember it when it's friday... :-)

Marie6, I'm looking forward to see your Malta fortresses photos!

PJ, I'm sorry to tell you I have no idea what the small white house is... Living here all my life that is a shame, but I will try to get some information, cause I couldn't find anything so far...

Thank you so much all of you for your nice comments.
