Turtles

People come to Quinta da Alagoa public park to release the turtles they have kept as pets, when they grow too much. There are hundreds of them in this big pond! I've counted 6 species so far, inclunding the less common softshell turtle (Trionyx spiniferus) on the 1st photo.

Now I know what to do with our turtle when it grows too big for us :) will have to come to portugal!
Thanks for visiting my blog, and yes my kids sure don't spend their time on playstations, we don't even have one!!! I believe in the great outdoors and plain, simple fun.

I am glad that they take them somewhere appropriate when they get too big. I can imagine this would have an interesting smell!!!

most People just doesn't know what having animals means... and the poor things just get abandoned to their luck...

Tr3nta, unfortunatelly most people still see pets as toys!... Gladly these turtles must be happy because the pond is really big and they have plenty of food: there are allways hundreds or thousands of newborn fish, also they seem to like bread very much, everytime someone is feeding the ducks! :-)

Thank you all for visiting and leaving your comments.

My sister loves Turtles! She lives in Kentucky and when she spots the baby turtles in the road, she gets out and takes them to the other side...She spends a lot of time on the side of the road during the baby season!

I'm with your sister, Mary Helen! :-)

Mary Jo, será que os plecos aguentam as temperaturas de inverno no lago?

Thank you both for stopping by!

Hi JM, nice photos you have here and about the turtle, I am kinda agree with Thien and everybody, the turtle will be happier in the wild than in the confinement of a box. Been tempted to have one but again it is huge responsible to have a pet!!!
Your DP is such an inspiration, beautiful pictures, nice short stories. I am going to add you on my blog roll. thanks for sharing about your city!
