During his reign Lisbon was totally destroyed by the big 1755 earthquake, followed by a tsunami and a fire. With the help of his PM Marquis of Pombal and Count of Oeiras, the city was rebuilt as we see it now.The statue sits on Terreiro do Paço, city biggest square, by the Tagus river.

I had no idea a tsuanami hit this area. I can see another history book joining my library.
Mo, those who know Lisbon will be very suprised to know the water covered downtown and went up all Avenida da Liberdade (Liberty Avenue) area almost reaching Marquis of Pombal square, which is really far from the river (remember the city is on the mouth of the Tagus river big estuary). It must have been something out of this world!

With that accomplishment alone, he's definitely worth the largest square! He must have been an amazing leader.
Well, Hilda, in fact the true 'genius' was his PM the Marquis, who had a great influence near the king and so in the history of the country, not only on the reconstruction of the capital (and surroundings) but in most aspects...
Having read a little (just a little) about Lisbon, this sparks my memory. What a cataclysm it was! The people who stayed and rebuilt were determined to make it beautiful, and they did.

King Jose sounds like a great guy. I liked how you spliced the pedestal to the statue - very clever & effective. The horse is just beautiful too.
