Paula Rego

Paula Rego is the most famous living portuguese female painter. She was born in Lisbon (1935) within a rich family, during Salazar's regime, which would be a later influence in her work. Married to an english artist, she moved to London in 1975.
Her work often gives a sinister edge to storybook imagery, emphasizing malicious domination or the subversion of natural order, sometimes dealing with polemic social realities.
Paula Rego was shortlisted for the Turner Prize in 1989 and was awarded the Degree of Doctor of Letters honoris causa by Oxford University in June 2005.
Part of her work can currently be seen at Palácio Anjos (and taking photos is allowed!).

"Storybook imagery" rings out loud and clear. Thanks for the info on her JM: I had no knowledge of her prior to this.

I love those museums where they actually let you take pictures. Scotland is quite good for that actually.

Moving abroad in 1975, just when things were beginning to look brighter at home... Must have felt strange.

Per, you are right. She moved to London one year after the revolution, so she missed a lot around here...
