Remnants

'Marianas' was a shanty town at Carcavelos controlled by drug dealers. The surrounded area was allways full of junkies; you could easily see them on the road sides shooting heroin, if you were driving by, which was not a good idea at night. This was a dangerous place even for the police.
It took many years before the thousands of immigrants who lived there were relocated at different places according to a special program and houses and barracks were torn down a couple of years ago. This is all you see now.
New buildings will soon grow like mushrooms as roads are allready done and trees have been planted in the area, but in the meanwhile it's nice to see this space building free now.

Olivier, sorry if I made you think it was a common neighbourhood. In fact it was a shanty town and I've just changed words on the post...

I could not have imagined a shanty here ... Always interesting to know the story of a town !

It's good that the dangerous area was cleaned up. It looks kind of sad now though.

So, is this a safer place now? I hope it is ...

Btw, JM, I posted a story about keroncong, an Indonesian folk music that is supposedly adapted from fado, a Portuguese folk music. I'd like to know if fado still exists and how similar it is with keroncong. I have a video in the blog to accompany the story and photo. It would be an honor if you could check the accuracy of the info about fado and share it with me.

Thanks.

Every town has places such as this. It's good that it was removed.

Trouble is the problem just gets moved. Same as the area I live in here. Once prostitutes and drug dealers. Now becoming trendy. The problem has not gone away, just moved.

Interesting story... maybe in the future it will grow to become a nicer area.

Good to know that the dangerous shanty was cleaned up and the people relocated. At least they're not banding together in that spot and posing a threat.

How awful...they should just completely tear them down. Or spruce the area up.

We had an area in San Diego, it was all homeless people and drugs/drinking/problems. They went in and totally redid the area with trendy restaurants/nightclubs and it cleaned up nicely. But really they only moved the problem rather than taking care of it.

Sounds like the kind of place where one would just want to start all over again, turn it into a better neighborhood.

Apart from the sad background, from a photographic point of view I can see why you took a picture here. Interesting composition, if one can say that in this case. Don't know if that was your intention.
