Rebuilding

19th century buildings have been torn down while their façades are kept. After so many 'architectural crimes' committed in the last decades, it's good to know this is nowadays a common sight in Lisbon.

la mosaïque sur les murs est magnifique, elles sont d'un autre temps et j'aime cela
the mosaic on walls is splendid, they are of another time and I like it

Some people complain about facadism as being false but I don't agree. It's a way to keep the integrity of the city's original design while making functional buildings.

What a great way to combine the old and the new.

It would be a shame to have the lovely tile destroyed. Once it's gone we miss these old beauties.

I'm glad to see this happen, instead of tearing it down! They have done that same thing here with several buildings.

I with you! One cannot stop change, but one can use the best of the past with what's good in the new!

I always think this is such a good way of keeping a city's history...unsafe or unusable buildings would otherwise be torn down. Interesting picture.

Great to see they're keeping these beautiful facades.

What an interesting concept. I should have noticed, but I've been unaware. I think it's an interesting way to retain architectural "character" on a new building, which so many modern structures sadly lack.

that is simply beautifully :)

Thanks for your visit to my Helsinki blog.
I'm on a revisit and I've been scrolling down your posts. For a small town you have so many interesting buildings and views to present. Some are just like I see the mediterranean buildings. White with blue doors and window frames. Others are totally different, like that wall with the art panels on it.
This last post I totally agree that implementing a more fresh style on an old building might just make the whole picture more interesting so there's nothing wrong with it. Many times modern buildings built instead can be so boring and plane.

How wonderful! I wish they'd do that for the old buildings of the City of Manila too.
