Restauradores

Spain invaded Portugal in 1580. Three spanish kings, the Filipes, have ruled the country (the third Dinasty) until 1640, when a group of portuguese noble men managed to fight back, having restored the independence. They were called the 'Restauradores' and this 30 meters high obelisk, built in 1886, standing at a big square with the same name in Lisbon, is a tribute to them.

Restorers of independence deserve a stone "thank-you" of 30 meters.
It's really a nice one.
Hope there is no graffiti on it, old or new. Thanks for your interesting comment on the subject.
Your banner makes me want to jump in the water.

Hopefully, they will be erecting one in Iran before too much longer.

The obelisk is grand but I really must say that what drew my attention at most was the header photo, such a beautiful blue ocean!
God bless you!

Beautiful statue and superb photo.

An obelisk is an obelisk and it may have great meaning. But it takes a well-composed, beautiful photo like this to dramatize it properly!

I am enjoying the little histroy lessons, too. And this shot -- the black silhouette looks very heroic from this angle.

Must be nice having a statue erected in your honour. Although you'd probably have to be dead first before it went up.

Is there a figure on the other side?
