This site was created for the Portuguese World Exhibition in 1940 but the building was remodelled to house the museum eight years later.
Believe it or not it was closed in 2003 and has remained abandoned since then!
Restoration works are now taking place inside and (hopefully!) it will open doors again soon.

I hope that it does reopen.
Poor little donkey! I hope they repair his ear.
A little progress!
Ahh que dor no coraçao, é triste! As esculturas são lindas, mas é uma pena ver o estado do lugar!

It is sad that it was abandoned...I wonder why? But so good that it is being restored. I'm sure there are many other unique and interesting things you can photograph once it is back up and running!
Like the colours in the first! It reminds me of some Ron English works
It's a pity, I think I saw this open in the late 90s, but it was already in not a very good state.
Love the cowbells too, would enjoy a day photographing here.
How were you able to capture the first image?
@Brattcat: The oxen are outside the building, in the street.
I love the simplicity of the oxen sculpture.
How wonderful that it's going to be restored!
Well that's just too bad, hopefully that'll be changed soon, as you said. I also like the oxen, they remind me of some Mexican pottery we see around here.
I had to laugh at your "lots of lines" comment on my last post. That's what I was thinking of when I was dragged inside the airport. I could have stayed there quite some time photographing all the lines!
Fantastic and beautiful shots !!Great post !!
So sad to see this abandoned. I hope restorations is really taking place. MB
I liked the first photo. very cute :)
Those bovines are really my kind of thing and my kind of photo. I hope they're repaired and the place opened again.
