Hazy Mountain

Sintra Mountain Range as seen from the city of Sintra, 15 kms north of Oeiras.
The Moorish Castle (9th century), with its 450 m long walls, stands on the top. It is part of the Cultural Landscape of Sintra, recognised as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Both this and the previous photo are incredible, and show that your region has such an amazing history. You're making me want to plan another trip to Portugal, it's been over 30 years since I've been there.

Yesterday I read that it takes about an hour to walk to the castle from the city. Now I can see why.

The haze on the mountain adds to this scene. The castle seems wrapped in mystery.

I have been to Sintra twice, but never made it up to the Moorish Castle... Next time! :-)

Hey, that's great! I have many memories of this place.
First time I was in Sintra (on my own): decided to walk up to see Palácio da Pena and Castelo dos Mouros, got lost, found a group of students who were going to do rappelling nearby, walked nearly two hours with them and almost had to climb a small cliff to get there...
Second time I was in Sintra (with Léia): decided to take the bus, the driver was a ... er ... rude man ... expelled us from the bus because we got on too early (man, the door was open!), we got angry, decided to walk, stayed on the "good path" and nevertheless it took us almost two hours to get there... :)
And I don't regret any of it, the place is marvellous!
God bless you!

What is so striking about this photo, other than the subject matter, is the way the light casts the houses in such sharp relief as opposed to the misty mountains. Superb!

As I recall there is (or was) a woman blogger from Sintra - a woman who took pride in being a "traditional Catholic woman" and she posted some very fine photos of the area. So beautiful!

Wow what a perfect shot. I do hope you show us more pictures of the Moorish Castle. Is the whole top of the hill walled? Cool! MB

That's a gorgeous photo, the mistiness of the background and those sweet houses in front. I join the clamour for more photos of this place. Living in a World Heritage Site myself, I am really interested in seeing other sites.
