São Roque Church

The building dates back to the late 16th century and survived the 1755 Lisbon Earthquake without too much damage.

Thank God it survived. This church and the ceiling especially are gorgeous.

Quando for em Lisboa usarei teu blog como guia.

Que linda esta igreja, parece que o teto foi betumado por cima da pintura. Esse tom preto parece betume.

Fantástico!

I can see that there is a lot to see iside this church. All those paintings must tell a story. This is a wonderful historic building.

Utterly stupendous! I simply can't imagine having places to visit in my hometown that look like this and date so far back. Is that ceiling made of wood? I think I see long lines that remind me of a hardwood floor. If so, is that common?

An absolute beauty. It looks so dark in the first photo and so bright in the second one!

It's hard to imagine that this place was here at the time of Martin Luther! Talk about living history. And it is truly a gorgeous building. But, again, your photos are so good and they show it off so well.

"Sao" means "saint" in English. A rogue is a rather nasty character in our language. Was there a St. Rogue? I guess I'll have to spend some time with my ol' friend, Google.

Okay, I shouldn't ask you all those questions until after I have done some research...

The site of the church was where victims of the plague were buried...St. Roch was considered the Holy Protector from the Plague.

Sometimes the Internet is a wonderful thing!

Rococo with a capital R. I suppose these churches were designed to inspire awe in the illiterate but they still make a strong impression today.

Incredible, the artistry here is so impressive. And I don't know how a building like this survives a major earthquake!

All the dark wood give this such a dramatic fee. So beautiful.

The ornate buildings in your part of the world make just about everywhere in Australia seem spartan.
