Rua do Carmo

August 1988: a fire destroyed this part of the city and, once again, much of the downtown Lisbon history was lost for good.

A sad bit of history. It looks like the area was restored nicely.

Que coisa impressionante este incêndio! Lamentável a perda histórica.

Conhecendo um pouco da história de Portugal através das tuas lentes e narrativas. Grata.

So tragic when things like this happen, so much lost..but by the look of it JM it might not be the same but it has been restored beautifully.

It's a beautiful perspective. Too bad so much of history gets lost in disasters.

The rebuild has a lot of character, which would be unlikely around here. It is very beautiful and I like the angle of this shot.

I agree with Woody regarding rebuilding with character here in the states! Love your composition, JM, as always and as always, a superb capture! Enjoy your evening!

It's sad about fire but your photo is really cool! Even after the fire Lisbon seems like an amazing place.

So glad it has been rebuilt in a pleasant way but probably not as nice as the original!

The Great Fire of Lisbon...how tragic - but one day the new buildings will have a history too.

Hi JM, thanks for your comments on Clarence Valley Today. It is a long way from rural Australia to your city but that is the great thing about bloging. I have traveled to Europe many times but sadly never to Portugal. Oh well your blog will transport me there.
This was a really interesting post. I sort of remember this event on the news a few years back.

Something nice has risen from the ashes. But what a fierce and terrible fire in that photo. oi ...

Fantastic perspective in the top shot.

I'm not clear, what your photo taken before or after the fire? If after, Lisbon sure did a nice job of rebuilding. Impressive... as is your street shot, JM.
