Post-Earthquake Architecture

Lisbon collapsed in November 1755: the earthquake was followed by a tsunami and a five days fire. Then the whole town was rebuilt according to this style.

I like the way this building is painted.

I do love the style, the colors that are used and the wrought iron balconies. Sounds like our weather in some places today! Great post/photo for the day as always, JM! Have a wonderful weekend!

I had no idea that Lisbon was re-built. Great architecture!

What a disastrous trifecta of events to happen one after the other JM, one of these things would have been bad enough, but three, that's just not on! I really like the style and colours in the rebuilding!

An elegant style it is, too.
Modern buildings all seem to subscribe to the "Stacked Ice Cube Tray School of Architecture."

I had no idea that such a thing had happened to Lisbon. Love the style of this building!

Well, I think it is a rather elegant style...but the "whole town"? Another question would have to do with requirements for buildings to be earthquake/tsunami resistant?

What are all the wires about. Telephone? Electric power?

You don't have to answer all that; my mind wanders at times!

I find it interesting that the effect of an earthquake so long ago can still be seen.

what a brave city to rise so elegantly from such disasters.

@Lowell: Check this page, I guess you might find it interesting and it will answer all your questions: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1755_Lisbon_earthquake
As to the wires, it's tram cables, they still work in this area.

Vi uma foto antiga do tsunami em Lisboa, que me surpreendeu, pois não sabia do acontecido.

Gosto desta arquitetura. É um povo forte e guerreiro.
