Fado

Fado (destiny, fate) is a music genre which can be traced to the 1820s in Portugal. It's form of music is characterized by mournful tunes and lyrics, often about the sea or the life of the poor. The music is usually linked to the Portuguese word saudade which symbolizes the feeling of loss (a permanent, irreparable loss and its consequent life lasting damage). On November 27, 2011, Fado was inscribed in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage Lists. (source: Wikipedia)
If you are not familiared with this kind of music, check this video of Mariza, maybe the greatest voice of the 'modern' Fado.

I, too, love the last shot looking down the steps! Superb composition, JM! I also love the video, a lot of passion that you can see and feel both in the singer and one of the guitar players in the quartet as well as the audience. A great performance! Thank you for including it! Hope your week is off to a good start!

Superb post in every way. Terrific photos and I've learned something new having no knowledge previously of Fado...thanks for the link, too. She is quite a singer and the music, so mournful, like an elegy! Great mural!

Thanks for showing the second shot. It's nice to see the wall in context. Guess I'm off to listen to some fado now. I'm very intrigued.

Para mim o Fado representa, em certo sentido, Portugal. Fiquei feliz quando foi considerado Patrimônio da Humanidade.

Gosto destas ruas que dão em calçadas que ligam uma parte a outra da cidade. Bem coisa antiga.

Your second shot made me smile. The steep stairs, the antique tiles, the even more ancient cobblestones, and then a bright, modern mural about an old, traditional music form. So much to take in from this photo. I can't quite tell if the mural is celebrating or gently mocking the fado scene.

Thank you also for the video. I've heard "of" fado but had not heard it until now. So mournful even when you don't understand the words. I kept jumping from link to link to hear more Mariza. You also educated me on the UNESCO concept of intangible cultural heritage. Wow, this post is a veritable seminar. Thank you for participating in this week's Monday Mural.

I love these! All that black and white surrounding that lively and colorful mural. Couldn't be a more perfect setting. The viewpoint on the second one is like a cubist painting or an M.C. Escher. The artist integrated the mural into the environment beautifully. Absolutely abulous!! Now, I'll look into Fado...

So much art and culture in on tiny corner! An explosion of individuality!

Both the close and long views are fascinating. Is this a place where the style arose or was performed? There is little opportunity to hear fado in the US, unfortunately.

The wall looks like a cartoon dropped down in the midst of this beautiful old place. I"m not entirely sold on this type of urban art, but it did make me smile, so I guess I"m on board!
