Fado (destiny, fate) is a music genre which can be traced to the 1820s in Portugal. It's form of music is characterized by mournful tunes and lyrics, often about the sea or the life of the poor. The music is usually linked to the Portuguese word saudade which symbolizes the feeling of loss (a permanent, irreparable loss and its consequent life lasting damage). On November 27, 2011, Fado was inscribed in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage Lists. (source: Wikipedia)

I also love the video, a lot of passion that you can see and feel both in the singer and one of the guitar players in the quartet as well as the audience. A great performance! Your second shot made me smile. The steep stairs, the antique tiles, the even more ancient cobblestones, and then a bright, modern mural about an old, traditional music form. So much to take in from this photo. I can't quite tell if the mural is celebrating or gently mocking the fado scene.

I love these! All that black and white surrounding that lively and colorful mural. Couldn't be a more perfect setting. The viewpoint on the second one is like a cubist painting or an M.C. Escher. The artist integrated the mural into the environment beautifully. Absolutely abulous!! Now, I'll look into Fado...

Both the close and long views are fascinating. Is this a place where the style arose or was performed? There is little opportunity to hear fado in the US, unfortunately.

The wall looks like a cartoon dropped down in the midst of this beautiful old place. I"m not entirely sold on this type of urban art, but it did make me smile, so I guess I"m on board!

Wow JM, fantastic images, love the composition of both, so vibrant colourful. I really enjoyed the video, I love to learn something new everyday and I honestly hadn't heard of Fado before, Mariza is a master of the genre.
