The Naked Truth

Eça de Queiroz (1845-1900), the greatest Portuguese writer in the realist style, at downtown Lisbon.
This bronze statue is a replica. The original stone work was vandalized during Salazar's dictatorship and it's on display at the City Museum gardens.

This is all so expressive! The statue itself, the angle of your picture, the light... Great image!
Feliz Páscoa!

I am not familiar with this writer and am wondering what this statue is about. Is it one of his book titles?

I tried to google it and got your blog post :-)

@Joan: His writings are always characterized by a 'naked truth' and that is what the woman represents.

Superb photography...great use of light and shadow.

Re Senor Queiroz...I'd say he had his hands in more things than books. What a shame some morons had to mess up the original sculpture!

Too bad about the senseless vandalism, although the bronze statue is very compelling.

Glad that this was somewhat remade, it is a great work...

Beautiful! And a terrific capture as always, JM! It's always so sad to read about the vandalism and the loss or damage to parts of our art/history. Hope your weekend is going well!

The palm trees behind look like wings. They're naked angels. :)

Nice lighting on the statue and the palm tree.

Tres dramatic lighting JM, such a shame people just don't leave public property alone. Hopefully the original will be safer in the museum gardens. Hope that you're having a wonderful Easter break.

Great night shot, Jose. What a pity that the vandals attacked the original...
