29 S(eptember)

A huge protest against this government and the austerity plan which is destroying Portugal's economy and killing the middle classes took place in Lisbon for the third time this month.

The international press doesn't seem to be reporting that hundreds of thousands of people have taken the streets in Spain and Portugal yesterday to fight austerity.

You are right - I am not hearing anything about this here in the States. The US press has become so parochial and we are becoming so insulated. Everyone needs to realize this is a worldwide problem. We are all in this together.

The people fill your squares but here all we hear about is our own trouble--the possible atomic war.

Good luck, Europe.

You're right. I watch the national news every evening and check CNN's website several times daily and I've seen nothing about these demonstrations in your country.

No, I haven't seen these here, but know about it through yours and others blogs from Europe! Greece is having the same problems! It's not a very happy world that we live in these days! Thanks for your photos and info, JM!

No, we are seeing nothing of this in the U.S. I wouldn't know of it unless I visited your blog. I got a full body rush when I looked at your photos! We are having the same debate here, but nothing as intense as what I see here. I hope and pray I am witnessing the stripping away of the old oligarchy, and the beginning of something new and wonderful that can truly benefit and enrich people's lives everywhere...

Same problems here in Italy as I notice the banner mentions. :(

Wow, that crowd represents a powerful message. I hope they are listening. The sign is perfect.

It seems impossible that such huge demonstrations can go unreported JM, the world is truly going mad!

I wouldn't know about this if it wasn't for your blog! Incredible.

We hear nothing anymore from the various popular news agancies. We subscribe to others that let us know what is going on in the rest of the world and what our government doesn't want us to know. We are NOT sheep. MB

Hard times ahead. I think this message could apply to many countries these days - not only in Europe.

I still wonder about what they think to get from this: unrest instead of some kind of recovery? Do they still believe some generous soul will bail us out of this?

It's the same problem the world over, but you are right, we hear literally nothing about any of this in the press! What a shame!

And our problems continue to grow largely because we have forsaken democracy for oligarchy. We are now ruled by the corporations and their flunkies who serve as representatives in our Congress.

I'm too angry about the silence and lack of leadership to say anything civil.

You seem to be our eyes to all of this. Power to the people.

I've heard nothing about the demonstrations in Lisbon and just a bit about Madrid. Such difficult problems and I don't pretend to be an economist. So much social destruction, but there's a bill topay.

Very good post. I agree with these demonstrators. Bankers will get their share no matter what, you can rest assured of that, but what about the people ???

It isn't hitting our main stream press either, fortunately I don't read main stream for just that reason. It is being covered in placed like the Financial Times and CNN so some of us are very aware of your troubles, and your struggles.

It seems amazing this goes under-reported in the media. I see bits on Spanish protests in the NY Times, but even that is scant. Such uncertain times for so many - I work in the policy world, so it's scary and sobering on both a professional & personal level.

Que tristeza ver tanta gente na aflição por causa da ganicia dos poderosos!
