Art Nouveau

A store front conversion of a 18th century building took place in 1908 when Animatógrafo do Rossio opened doors for the Lisboners to watch movies.
A century later the sex business controls the place and peep shows is all you can watch there now.

Well, I guess it's good that the beautiful frontage is preserved, even if you wouldn't want to venture inside anymore. (Comments seem OK again now).

Too bad the theatre has become a place for peep shows. I guess now this must be in a seedy side of Lisbon.

What a change from movies to sex shows! The doorway is beautiful though. Diane

Now that really is a shame. Such beautiful art work should maybe frame the place where "art house movies" or independent films are shown. I doubt the people who go to the peep shows even notice this beautiful work.

I think the past and current use of this building would qualify for your urban decay series.

Glad to hear that your mother is doing better. Best wishes for her complete recovery.

Naughty , naughty! :;) Of course the facade reminds me of the Paris Metros!

So beautiful! What a sad world we live in...

The change is indeed sad, but still beautiful art work as Sharon has written and she's also right about the lack of appreciation from peep show people! Terrific, colorful capture, JM, as always! Enjoy your weekend!

well, that kind of went bad, didn't it?

Beautiful! I don't know of any art nouveau in our city so it is lovely to see it!

I love the Art Nouveau buildings in Prague but none of them would dare to have such a red curtain. That's Latin.

At least they kept the art nouveau decoration. Maybe we should go inside to see if they retained the decor inside?

So very beautiful! Love the details. :)

I'm sure the contrast of peep shows and the angelic tile mural is lost on many.

Such a shame, it really isn't right. :( This looks too beautiful to be the door to something like that.
(I am not a prude, but peep shows & art nouveau just don't mix well, imho)

P.S.: I always envisioned to have such doors to my house when I got older. :D

That Art Nouveau is so beautiful. How sad that it now has such seedy tenants.

Not my favorite era artwork wise but this is nice.

Magnifico!
Adoro mesmo!
I mean I love "Art Nouveau"! Not the fact that the building is used for such a business;o)
