José Saramago (16 November 1922 – 18 June 2010) was a Portuguese novelist, poet, playwright and journalist.
In 1992, the Portuguese Prime Minister Cavaco Silva -yuck!-, who currently is our President -yuck!-, ordered the removal of The Gospel According to Jesus Christ from the European Literary Prize's shortlist, claiming the work was religiously offensive. Disheartened by this political censorship of his work, Saramago went into exile on the Spanish island of Lanzarote, upon which he resided until his death in 2010.
In 1998 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature.

What a building! Fantastic. And a great story about this fine writer. It is so sad when the "authorities" believe they have the power to censor someone! I'm going to check out "The Gospel..." Sounds like something I would like.

I take it you have a dislike to a certain Cavaco Silva. I can say from what you are say that he doest sound a very nice chap. Anyone who messes with the work of the church needs to go into exile.

I remember this building! Saramago was a great man of strong opinions (which I don't share) and a great writer:Baltasar and Blimunda and The History of the Siege of Lisbon are my favorite works. I didn't know of the self-imposed exile, which is a very sad story.
