2M (March 2)

800.000 people protested against the government in Lisbon yesterday (1,5 million in 40 cities).

The Portuguese aren't short of reasons to grumble. The country is forecast to weather a third straight year of recession in 2013, unemployment has ballooned to a record 17,6% (!!!) and an avalanche of tax increases and welfare cuts shows no sign of letting up as the government looks for another €4 billion to cut.

Apart from the global crisis, we all know who the people responsible for the chaotic situation we are currently facing in Portugal are and not even one banker or one corrupt politician is behind bars.

It's a difficult time for you. So good that the people come out to show their anger.

It is very sad and very difficult for you!
We read about it in Norwegian newspapers too.
And I sell quite a lot of books/Norwegian courses to well educated young people (also many from Spain) who are here to go for jobs here in Stavanger.
It must be quite a challenge to do so.
Many are really doing well, and I am really impressed.

I hope the politicians will get the message and DO what is important to do.

Sadly as you say the ones that committed the crimes and corruption walk around as if they did nothing and there is no justice!
I hope better days come quickly. I can just imagine that no one can afford to lose any more then they have already lost!

This is a typical situation in so many countries, and there's lots of blame to go around. Hope there is a turn-around soon!

I am "happy" that these people are making a stand. Day in day out I wish people in my country would wake up and do something about it..

One can't help but wonder -- when does it stop and when are the people who are responsible, held responsible???

In answer to your question on my blog, JM, that last shot was taken at the zoo and the hippos were happily basking!

Hope you have a great week ahead!

so much of the world is in turmoil and facing similar situations. i'm not sure how it will ever turn around.

And the Republicans in our Congress are following the same route that Portugal and Spain have taken!

The perpetrators of our crisis also remain in places of power for the most part.

Hell, our war-mongering war criminal former president, vice president and secretary of defense have never had to face charges for their destruction of Iraq and the killing of hundreds of thousands and their actions leading up to the destruction of our economy!

Power to the people!

You are brave to take this photo, I hate crowds. Diane

Protest can lead to change. Let's hope so! The good people of Portugal deserve better.

Sobering pictures. I heard yesterday that nearly 2 million people turned out in Portugal. Decision-makers are so insulated I despair they'll ever understand what 17.6% unemployment truly means, or the criminality of the actions that created this situation.

First class photojournalism. The second image, in particular, has a sense of seething energy. We here in the US complain about our economic condition but it is nothing like all of Iberia.

That is so distressing! I wonder if it's just a matter of time that we don't see something similar here with the recent round of cuts that none of us know what will feel like. The crowds should be applauded for their courage and peaceful approach.
