Decay (LXXX)

Odéon Theater (1927) at downtown Lisbon

The opening of hundreds of Warner Bros/Lusomundo cinema rooms in shopping malls decades ago in this country ruined most of the wonderful theaters from the glorious period.

É triste ver esse abandono, um teatro que tem tanta historia e bela arquitetura.

Such a shame JM, these old theatres and cinemas have so much more character than the big complexes.

Oh, this is really wonderful. I'd love to see the inside.

Such a shame. One of the things I enjoyed about 15 years of traveling for work was finding some old theaters in cities like St. Louis, Chicago and Denver. I'd go out of my way to see movies at these places so I could experience the unique decor and vintage feel they offered. It certainly made the movie experience more worthwhile.

Such a beautiful old theater and such a shame indeed, JM!! And such a loss! When I was s little girl it was always such an adventure to go to the movies because of the wonderful theaters where they were shown -- nothing that impressive about a theater in a mall these days!!!!

That is a sorry sight! I'll bet it looked grand in its original configuration.

Are you safe wandering about this part of the city taking pictures? Looks kinda scary!

Even the awful tags brighten up a little this sad place. I am sure it was a beautiful building...

On se sääli ja harmi että näin kauniin rakennuksen annetaan mennä pilalle.
Rakennus on ollut ja on edelleen tosi viehättävä.

What a contrast to many of your recent photos, JM. Still makes for an interesting photograph. Maybe someone will come along and return this building to its former glory.

The same problem has happened here although none of our theatres were as grand as this one must have been in its heyday!

And we go along with it... If people hadn't flocked to the new places... What a crying shame.

It's almost impossible for small and locally owned concerns to stand up to the corporations. It looks like this was once beautiful and distinctive, such a contrast to the anonymous places today. When I was young there was a spectacular Fox Theater in San Francisco - lush and classy. It was closed and torn down to make way for a boring plaza - the loss has been lamented ever since.

I am imagining that iron work with a fresh coat of white paint. Interesting.

Ok, so what do they do? Knock it down? Dave it? What to do.

That's sad. It could be such a beautiful building.

That is a venerable building, no ?

So sad to see this. It's too bad that more places like this can't be saved. :(

This is sad. The same thing happened in the USA, but increasingly we are seeing the old movie theaters being renovated (if they have not already been torn down).

And now all the cinemas around our country towns are in a state of decay, but nothing so splendid as this. This one is a beauty.

Lamentável. Tão importante e nesse estado.
