National Archive of Torre do Tombo

The archive is one of the oldest institutions in Portugal, since its installation in one of the towers of the castle in Lisbon, occurring during the reign of Fernando I (1378). It was moved from the National Palace of São Bento to the new building in 1990.

It looks strong enough to protect the archive.

Interesting structure. Such a contrast to the majority of buildings you share. Very solid indeed.

What are those four things on the façades? This isn't much my style of architecture...

@Ciel: Gargoyles.

Gargoyles on a linear building like that! That's unexpected. It looks as if at least the lower floors may have more light than expected. Interesting structure!

Nice architecture.

Not very attractive is it. I know of a building like that here in Australia and they put fake windows on the exterior to make it looks less formidable.

The last work of Soviet architecture, in Portugal? By the way, it looks functional and not bad at all...

This is scary. It's threatening. Fascist! Yiks! But I have a feeling someone could not break into it very easily!

A fine photograph - love the symmetry!
