Saint Anthony of Lisbon

A huge collection of St. Anthony statuettes is on display at a gallery/shop in Alfama, Lisbon's oldest district. From the naïf/kitsch to the most conventional and rich stlyles, you'll find it all. I have never been inside this place and I was totally in awe. The architecture and details of this very old building are absolutely amazing and I would love to show it to you but, stupidly, taking photos is not allowed so, this is the only one I got before being caught.

June is the month for the popular street parties in the Lisbon's oldest and most typical neighbourhoods and Saint Anthony, also known as Anthony of Padua, is their patron saint.

It's funny to imagine the moment of you getting caught, something every photo blogger knows. :)

I suppose they're worried you will take a picture of some kitschy thing, copy it and sell it. :) Same thing has happened to me at our local arts and crafts fair. Dumb!

Will you be going to any block parties?

@Lowell: Foreign tourists (and a lot of Portuguese) go crazy with all the fun at night, but I already had my share! :-) What I might do is going during the day and take photos of all the preparations like I did last year:

We'll see.

Too bad about the photos. I really don't understand the "no pictures" rule at some places.

It really is silly that people don't let you take photos of the inside of some buildings. There is so much information out there on the internet that if you were stealing some idea from someone you wouldn't do it so blatantly as to take a photo in front of them. Fun sculpture however!

Absolutely kitsch and lovely at the same time. I am glad you managed to get at least this one shot!

We always pray to St Anthony when we lose something and he often helps. ;-)

I hate no picture signs. Nice sneaky shot.
