Another Passageway

... leading to the one I posted on yesterday.

Alfama is Lisbon's oldest distric where the Moorish elite lived until 1147. A four months siege brought the city under definitive Portuguese control and the Moors were expelled. Check this watercolour of the siege by famous painter Roque Gameiro (1865-1934).

very cool archways, even if a bit narrow looking.

Looks like you enjoy doing some of the same things I like to do when visiting a city, explore the lesser traveled streets and passages.

That painting was interesting.

I would avoid said passageway at all costs, especially at night. This would make a good set for a scene from a James Bond film!

Lovely. I love these narrow streets. We do not have such.
The last image is a great perspective.

I really like this! I don't know why, but as I look at these photos I think of the classic movie Oliver Twist!

There is intrigue down there! We would have to lead Lowell along I think!

Nice shots!

Our buildings in the US are brand new compared to these and its even more impressive that they have survived a catastrophic earthquake.

Interestingly, the ships in the Gameiro watercolor look to me like traditional Viking watercraft.

It's amazing that these medieval streets continue to exist. Fabulous.

this is great. I have read about Alfama and the Moors and I can picture these streets. Must have been an old movie I had seen. LOL

What a painting of the siege! Hard to imagine what both sides went through in those troubled times.

Amei Alfama. Não só os árabes mas os estrangeiros se ¨refugiaram¨ neste bairro, deve ter sido por isso que gostei imenso. Alfama, lugar do estranho, do estrangeiro.
