Terreiro do Paço Square
The statue of King José I stands in the middle of the square facing the Tagus River right in front of the Quay of Columns.
Check the two previous posts and keep in mind all you see is "new" (late 18th century) as 85% of the Lisbon buildings were destroyed after the 1755 Earthquaque and Tsunami that followed it 40 minutes later.

That's a river?! It is huge.
That is so unexpected.
Your 'new' is still impressively old to we Aussies JM :) earthquakes and tsunamis must be terrifying to experience, I hope I never do. So nice to see the tall ship just off shore!
Really great shot. Like a real moment from the 18th century - especially with sailing ship. Tejo is really huge river. Thanks for sharing.
le fleuve, immense...
Une belle photo
Interesting piece of history. Love the view from up there!
I like this view too! The plaza below is so wide and open and that passing ship is perfect.
Incredible history and such a beautiful place!! And like Grace, I too, am impressed with your "new"!!
Such a wonderful view and superb captures as always, JM!!
What a view. The diamond pattern is really nice and the people really give you a sense of the immensity of the square.
Your new would be quite old for us!
Breathtaking view, I got this only from below...
As just said: great views from that arch!
Wauu.. how much empty space, both on land and in the river (sea?). But this is how it shall be respect for history.
A wonderful picture.
Hugs
What a view! And that beautiful old sailing ship. And the statue. I love everything about this shot and everything that's in it.
When I taught American history, I always did a section on Columbus and his travels to the "new world." One of the videos I used showed the three ships as they sailed down the Tagus and on into the ocean. It was very dramatic!
perfect view. i love the composition as well.
I hadn't realized how wide that river is. . .or that the earthquake was followed by a tsunami - double destruction.
This is an amazing shot. The sailing ship sets it off perfectly. Your trip to the top of the arch really paid off.
And you are José how much? :-) The king of photography.
Excelente fotografia....
Um abraço
Wonderful capture!!!
The two directions are completely different. I repeat what I say so often here: Lisbon is gorgeous.
The view in that direction is great too.
Looking south, then? An arch is what you want it to be, from Rome to Lisbon to St. Louis. If it supports its own weight it passes the test.
Adoro a escultura, um belissimo lugar!
