Garcia de Orta

National Institute of Tropical Medicine, Lisbon

Garcia de Orta was a Portuguese Renaissance physician and naturalist, a pioneer of tropical medicine.
I come here every ten years to get a yellow fever vaccine which is mandatory for entry in many tropical countries, mainly in Africa.

Tropical medicine. I actually looked it up, since I never heard of that strand of medicine before. What a great building and statue.

Tropical medicine the words make shudder. When I lived in Paoya New Guinea I found small cuts and abrasions that you would not give a second thought turned into big sores. And malaria was a constant hazard.
