Belém Tower

The fortified Belém Tower dates back to the early 16th century and it was part of a defensive system for the mouth of the Tagus River. In 1983 this former cerimonial gateway to Lisbon was classified by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site because of the significant role it played in the Portuguese maritime discoveries.
