Portuguese tiles are very special. But this sign needs some help. I'll check out the article after golf! :)

That's lovely. Too bad that's a tradition which hasn't carried forth.

Beautiful old sign. I enjoyed that article. Because of your site, I knew about the tiles but, there were some things listed that I didn't know about at all. Silk in Florence? Interesting.

@Kathy: The tile industry is alive and kicking! :-) The "problem" is that, in my opinion, modern 'classic' tiles don't have the charm of the weathered old ones. However, when it comes to contemporary design it's another story, as, for instance, we have on subway stations:

I love these old tiled street signs!
I so wanted to go and look at the beautiful underground stations with their tiled murals, but didn't have enough time when I was in Lisbon...
another thing on the list for next time!

I see your point José and agree. Yet, isn't it interesting that universally, we often agree about the charms and beauty of old, weathered art and architecture, yet we do not extend that same aesthetic toward ourselves.

Lovely- though it could use some attention!

What caused the lichen to be on the edges of the design but not on the other stones?

Colorful tiles.
