Mediterranean Sea

(World map above my desk)

There currently are 60 million refugees in the world, more than on WWII. What an evolution!

We are witnessing a paradigm change, an unchecked slide into an era in which the scale of global forced displacement as well as the response required is now clearly dwarfing anything seen before. (...) It is terrifying that on the one hand there is more and more impunity for those starting conflicts, and on the other there is seeming utter inability of the international community to work together to stop wars and build and preserve peace. (António Guterres, UN High Commissioner for Refugees)

There's no point on rotating the above photo 180º, the world already is upside down.

I agree, the world is really upside down...

A perfect post for the theme. Sad that people can not live happily together, greed I guess is the cause of most things. Diane

A very sobering post and I couldn't agree more.

A very interesting take on the theme and sad but true commentary on the state of the world.

A very powerful interpretation, well done and thought provoking.

A wonderful interpretation of the theme.
Sadly I have to agree with you, our world is indeed upside-down, too many wars and conflicts, too many refugees, a lot of poverty and financial instability, etc, etc.
I wish that the powerful countries would put a stop to all these conflicts!

Those red pins are for the places you've been and the green the ones on your bucket list still?

Lowell said...

Wow, I didn't realize the scale of the problem. But you're certainly right about the state of the world.

Oh, don't get me started! I'll leave it at this – "a picture is worth a 1000 words."

Wow.
Now I feel a little silly with my "upside down" photo. But it's good when someone/something makes you think. Thanks for this reminder of just how upside down some issues are these days.

I agree with uou, the world is upside down indeed, there are a lot of things going on everywhere, many people on the run for danger. A sad development.

It is upside-down because most of us put self before others, Jose. Once we are comfortable, and contented, and happy, we work hard to make sure that we do not have to share it with others.

The ruling clique in my own country is a perfect example of this. Tax the poor. Protect the rich. Reduce foreign aid. Turn back refugee boats at gun-point. Plunder the environment.

Both sides in the Grexit disaster are at fault. Here, it is a case of upside-down, and downside-up. Austerity never works to bring an economy out of recession. What is needed is support from Europe, and a greater work ethic from the Greek people. It would help if they had something other than tourism to sell on the international market, too.

Well said and illustrated.

A creative and thoughtful take on the theme, Jose. The PM of my country is one of the worst offenders in turning backs on the issue.

The situation is really scandalous. Thanks for this thoughtful post.
