This fort dates back to 1553 and is considered to be the greatest coastal defense building in Portugal (a large part is hidden by the palm trees).
During the French invasion, Napolean troops have occupied it in the year of 1807, but British allies conquered it one year later and in 1809 the fort was again in Portuguese hands.

Great shot and interesting history. Diane
The historical sites in your part of the world are so intriguing. They make our American places seem so young!
Your photo looks like a post card! Beautiful.
I have to agree with Kathy. Portugal has such a great history and lovely buildings.

Very impressive looking. I reckon it's open for visitors?
@Photo Cache: No, it's the official residence of the Minister of Defense...
It looks so very strong, JM! What a setting.

The view makes it a super place for a fort.

Looks like a postcard. :)
An impressive building.
Ah là là, Napo... :-)
This looks a bit like a Vauban fort, but it was obviously built before his time! Super shot JM!
Ditto to all the comments so far. It's a wonderful fort and a superb photo.
