Oeiras Mother Church - interior details

Oeiras Mother Church was first mentioned in historical documents dating back to the 16th century, but it was enlarged in 1777, so this is not its original look.

Sorry about the quality of the pics but, as photos are not allowed, I had to take them in a hurry... Even so I was caught!...

What beautiful detail. I hope you didn't get into too much trouble taking the pictures.

Those details are so fine.

Such beautiful & elegant decor! I'm curious though, what happened when you were caught?

You suffer for your art! It's interesting to see what look like neoclassical details in a church. The ceiling is stunning -- you managed to catch that blue beautifully.

Sharon and Ms. Hayes, in fact nothing special happened when I was caught: I've just heard a very determined 'lecture' about how much damage the flash can cause to the frescoes and I was asked to keep the camera... As I know it is absolutely true, I was quite embarassed and just left :-) I didn't even had tive to reach the main altar...
It happened exactly the same when I was visiting a synagogue in Prague a couple of years ago, but then they were less nice, I must say (there were no frescoes)...

Lisbon was such aging beauty of a city when I visited years ago. Sorry the blue glass plague has hit

Glad they let you go JM. You can usually get very good pictures inside churches without using flash. But many people leave it on accidentally, so that's why they don't allow any pictures taken. Maybe next time give it a try without flash and check out the results.

But you did not use a flash? did you?
Anyway thanks for risking a little trouble!!!.
The inside of the church is beautiful

Wow, I'm glad you took them, and yes, I usually leave my flash turned off inside too.

It was worth getting caught!

The architecture is so intricate in detail. It is good to allowed to photograph inside, many places here just will not let us photographers in.

Marie-Noyale and Marc, I know I shouldn't, but I used the flash twice (I thaught I was all alone)...

Sometimes it's difficult to understand why you are not allowed ... and often it's impossible to resist! :-)

What strikes me about this church is that the outside is so devoid of color and the inside is all about color. The opulence in some houses of worship is astonishing. . .
