Beautiful bell towers. I remember being in a small village in Austria on a Saturday evening and Sunday morning and hearing the bells ring for long periods on Saturday night and Sunday morning. We don't hear that so much in Phoenix.
Well, only a few ring out... There are some streets with two and three curches. Can you imagine if all of them rang at the same time? I don't know how it was in the old days, but it would be hell for those who live or work there nowadays...
i love all the old churches in Europe. The other thing I have discovered is the number of free concerts that are held in churches. Perfect acoustics brilliant music. Does that happen in Portugal?
I love bell towers...and I love these photos. I don't like bells clanging all the time, though...
Did you hear about the man who tried to steal from the rectory and the priest chased him away and he went and hid in the bell tower?
Well, that's true. But then a terrible thing happened. He tripped and fell head first into the bell which began clanging and swinging and knocked the poor guy right out of the tower where he landed on the ground and died!
People gathered around and someone asked the priest if he knew the man. The priest looked him over very carefully, and and then said:
"Can't say that I do, but his face sure rings a bell!"
I tried to google the answer about the number of churches, but didn'd find any answer! :-) So, let's just enjoy the view, the bells ... and the concerts!
Re your comment: The change-ringers at St. Mary's Cathedral in Sydney told me when they practice they have to shut the shutters in the bell tower because there was some law against "noise pollution."

Do they all still ring out? We have one church near us that plays recorded bell music now.
Nice how these bells are so visible.
Do the church bells ring during the day in Lisbon? (In Jerusalem's Old City, they do.)
JM - heavenly photos of bell towers! It must be wonderful to hear the bells being rung! Beautiful blue sky! Enjoy your weekend!
And is it like Venice where you hear the bells chiming throughout the day?
Bell towers have such a haunting quality to them. Maybe I've watched "Vertigo" too many times?
It seems like everyone else I wondering if the bells ring on Sunday.

I would love to have that many bell towers here! I wonder what it would sound like if they all rang out at once.
