Carmo Convent

The Carmo Convent dates back to 1389. It survived the great earthquake in 1755 but the church was severely damaged and has never been restored. The place currently is an Archaeological Museum displaying, among others, pieces found in the rubble at downtown Lisbon.

I was thinking of your shots of convents and churches when I was taking a photo of a church today.

JM, from the first photo you can see the detail of the church and a glimpse of its former beauty. Great angle with contrasts and shadows -- It is hard to beat that blue sky!

These are two truly beautiful compositions, JM. Have an excellent couple of days.

Somehow it is appropriate for a convent to be roofless and open to the heavens.

Have a good time away.

They seem to have wonderful "air-conditioning" in the church! Such a heavenly place!

I like the way you framed the top shot to capture the lines and the light.

I've got a ruined abbey on my blog - snap! The stone arches look great against the blue sky.

Even damaged and missing its roof, it is easy to see the beauty of the architecture. It must have been stunning in its prime.

Have a safe trip and a wonderful weekend!

That is SO spectacular. I'm glad it has a new life as a museum and is being preserved. It reminds me of places in England I still want to visit. Of course, Portugal is now on my list, too :)
