The palace was built on the residence of the former Muslim walis (12th century). Many alterations took place over the centuries and in 1755 it was severely damaged by the Lisbon Earthquake. However, it was rebuilt "in the old manner" but during the 19th and the 20th centuries went through numerous works which definitely changed some parts of it.

magnifique construction, assez original avec ces tours
A beautiful palace ...
@Olivier: Those 'towers' are chimneys! :-)
Terrific capture as always! It does look as though it has been through many changes! Interesting history!

It is quite beautiful and I love those towers!
What a fantastic, historic palace! I just wonder what it looks like inside....
That suspended concrete slap yesterday was an engineering wonder!
it is massive! The picture was taken from above and gives us a birds eye view. Very nice.
Another stunning palace! I have got to tour your country. You show us so many gorgeous places.
Magnificent architecture of moorish influence. The chimneys remind me of the Moroccan ceramic tagines. Visit Sintra again!!!
It's a gorgeous place!
Well it looks pretty good to me! I am trying to imagine how it used to look like.
The first word that came to mind was "light"! The light is fantastic. Second word coming to mind was "massive." The structure seems to go on and on. Rather a mix of shapes and styles, but the flow is pretty good. I like it.
The photo is superb.
I don't know what's going on with that thumbnail, JM. That one seems to be the only one! Obviously, Blogger has some kind of a problem...none of them showed up at all for a week or two as you know...
Sorry. I'd fix it if I could...
Beautiful!
One of the most recognizable palaces in the world. Great light against the dark sky!
Really beautiful. I love castles and palaces. :)
That place is amazing! Nice little country place to call your own.
Wonderful shot of this palace with the array of tile roofs... lovely! I have just added another reason (like I needed any more) to visit Sintra!

It's beautiful, I like the colors of it. I could sit and just listen to the history of your places for hours! :)
A great place !
Great building,-great chimneys - and great weather!
- Enjoy your weekend!:)
I like those pointy towers ... but not as chimneys.
Beautiful architecture! I like how they rebuilt it "in the old manner." So much more of the history is preserved that way :-D
Very beautiful palace and photo...
