We visited here 10 years ago. The entire monastery complex was wonderful. I seem to recall that there was a tomb of a famous person in this church, but I could be wrong and can't remember for sure.

@Dave:

Great memory! :-) Vasco da Gama's and Luis de Camões' tombs are there.

What an intricate ceiling! Your photos of this monastery have always intrigued me so I'm especially happy to get a look inside. Comparing the construction, I'd say the church is part of the monastery.

The did build things to last back in the days!

That stonework just blows me away! It's so hard to imagine how this was accomplished. These images really capture the scale, height, and detail of this architectural marvel.

Wow! This is magnificent. I can sometimes understand why people liked to go to church in the old days. ;)

@Lowell:

The building was severely damaged buy the 1775 earthquake, but it didn't collapse! :-)

Superb images JM, how on earth did they succeed with such an undertaking so many years ago, even today that would be such a challenging project.

Well, JM, if they need help dusting this place, I am not going to volunteer!

Magnificent ceiling! I think my neck would be hurting if I was in there for too long just from looking up.

Oh my God that has to be the most beautiful church I have ever seen. Thank you for sharing these shots! Happy Sunday.

When I go to church in places like this I always find myself looking up into the ceiling ... I would sure do it here.

The gothic arches and romanesque windos make a nice melding of styles. A beautiful church indeed.

These are the churches I adore. Having been a church organist, I can just imagine sitting at the organ and the pipes blasting forth the notes from my favorite hymns. A stunning capture. genie
