Devout

(Old) Church of Our Lady of Conception, Lisbon

This was my first visit to this church and I have no idea 'who' is inside the glass box - creepy! -, some saint I guess. I could have asked the woman but she was so concentrated that I didn't want to bother her (actually she didn't even see me).

This is just one more church that collapsed after the 1755 Great Earthquaque. However, the stone elements of the façade were reused in the reconstruction and are a great example of the original Manueline style. Unfortunatelly I didn't manage to get a proper shot - narrow street, tram cables and much traffic - but you can check it here.

A wonderful picture in many ways. I have the same problem taking pictures inside churches, but the temptation is often too strong...

The church really looks old inside. I wonder if it´s someone inside the box or maybe just a figurine?

@Sami: I'm sure it's a figurine but, nevertheless, it's creepy!

I agree, that is creepy. You should resurrect the Taphophile Tragics meme which Julie had to abandon.

I would rather see a plaque, photo or sign with inspirational information about a person's life than a body or figure of a dead body that leaves visitors wondering who the person was.

I have seen this type of saintly memorial before and usually there are hundreds of notes, photos and trinkets strewn around the glass case or attached to it. I was told they were prayers for a person's health. Beautiful front door to this church.

Gosh so much restoration after the 1755 Earthquake JM, thank goodness they did restore and not rebuild! This church has the most intricate and fabulous facade, thanks for the link!

Aw...nah, I'd better not.

Great photo, though. I'll bet the place smells musty. That glass box on the original altar is godawful!

Yes, definitely creepy, but whatever works, I guess???? Terrific, interesting capture though, as always, JM! Hope your week is going well as we slip into Christmas mode!!

Love the old church but it's a bit strange to see a figure of a dead body.

I can't help taking pictures as discreetly as possible...

Re. the Christmas trees: I think that 99.9% of them aren't potted. That's if 100% aren't.

Creepy is right, but fascinating. I lacked the courage to take a similar photo in Ravello.

If they can display the real (dead) Lenin in Moscow, then I am all for believing this is a real (dead) person.

Taphophile Tragics was taken over by another blogger to run on her own site. I will check out how she is traveling.

There's an anchor at the foot of this person, making it a little odder still.

What a fascinating photo! I'm sure it must be a model of someone important inside there..

What a beautiful and peaceful photograph.

It certainly begs the question of who is in the box.

This kind of devotion is a mystery to me; I agree, it is creepy!
