Église Saint Louis-des-Français

Church founded in 1552 for the Francophone Catholic community in Lisbon.
This is not the original look of the building which was seriously damaged after the 1755 Earthquake.

That is a beautiful frame for that door!

They got one in Rome too, with three Caravaggio inside!

I wonder why there are bars on that upper window?

VP stole my comment, as I knew he would! I have visited San Luigi dei Francesi in Rome twice but wasn't aware of the one in Lisbon. I hope I can find time to visit this decade!

I too am curious about the bars on the window. They seem odd unless they're somehow bracing it? It's quite an impressive door.

I would guess the Francophones were Francophiles. Naturally.

Is there still a large Francophone Catholic community in Lisbon?

Hard to believe anything has been around since 1522. I'm assuming this doorway was reconstructed following the earthquake. Quite impressive.

Didn't know that :)

An earthquake 260+ years ago is still on the minds of people in your town. America was mostly a wilderness then.

The 1755 earthquake really changed really changed everything for your city JM, you have to wonder how it would look today if the quake hadn't happened.
