Rossio Square, Lisbon
The theatre was built between 1842 and 1846 on the site of the old Estaus Palace (1450) which became the seat of the Inquisition in the 16th century. Surprisingly the palace survived the 1755 Great Earthquake but it was destroyed by a fire in 1836.

Mother Nature was determined in one way or another to get the old palace hey JM :) I should imagine watching a play in the theatre would be quite an experience.
An impressive and truly amazing building. It must be a real pleasure to enter ad enjoy it.
What a pleasant building!
This is just beautiful, JM.
It is so elegant from the outside, I can imagine it is no less elegant inside. Fire is always a problem but it was much more so in the olden days when everything was lit by candlelight.
Such history. It is a wonderful shot also with all that water.
Such a beautiful building and I love the fountain outside.
I have to come back to Lisbon!
Such a beautiful building!!! And I love the fountain. Like so many of the buildings/places there is always so much fascinating history! Terrific capture as always, JM! Have a great weekend!!
wow! really beautiful!
And no sign to spoil the view!!! Gorgeous.
Gorgeous building...and I love that fountain! Great photo!
That's so beautiful, JM!
I'm guessing this building has a cheerier history than the Estaus Palace. Nice shot.
It is a beautiful building and a spectacular fountain.
Beautiful building and fountain.
Everything in this scene is exquisite, from the palace to the fountain, and even the street lamps.

To me it looks like a theatre should, where you enter into a different world.
Did you notice the pattern of light on the tiled roof? . . but of course you did.
well no matter what it replaced it is a beautiful building. MB
