African migrants on the shore of Djibuti City at night raise their phones in an attempt to catch an inexpensive signal from neighboring Somalia - a tenuous link to relatives abroad. Djibuti is a common stop-off for migrants in transit from such countries as Somalia, Ethiopia or Eritrea, seeking a better life in Europe and the Middle East.

It is in Amsterdam too, have been there.
What an interesting photo! It's so filled with drama and tension...and expressed the truth that so many are living very desperate lives.
Thanks for all your comments! Your kindness makes my day!
wow.
Wow, that is a touching photo. Last night I saw Les Miserables for the 8th or 9th time and each time I see it I'm struck by how desperate and difficult life was for some people. Then I realize that life is still exactly that desperate and difficult for way too many people around the world to this day.
Oh, I do agree with Lowell, an interesting capture indeed and so much drama. You do have amazing captures, Jose! Thanks as always for visiting my blog and, yes, your kindness makes my day as well! Have a great weekend!
It's a brilliant shot Jose.. When you see images like this it makes you realize just how much we take for granted and how hard even the smallest things can be for some.
I remember seeing that shot when it was first published. It's very effective.
Beautiful and moving.
It's brilliant and frightening at the same time...
This is just a great photo.
Hugs
Wonderful shot!
A wonderful shot.
I agree with so many of the other comments. Reminds me of the statement "privilege is invisible to those who enjoy it." Photos like this are a poignant reminder. It's a stunning photo, too.
Wow.
I wish I could shoot photos like this one.
Beautiful photo. Sadly that are still so many displaced people around the world due to wars, etc. We all want the best life for ourselves and our kids!
Gosh, Kay, that quote is so apt. And Lowell, my brain has been following yours lately.
That is a great photo - a well-deserved winner.
What an interesting shot but I am amazed that they even have phones there. Having lived in Africa for so many years the phones were not a common thing at that time. Have a good day Diane
This is a picture that stays with you. So touching, and mystical too. It could become an icon (in the old meaning) of the 21st century.
