European Day Of Action Against Austerity

Photo taken on the September 15 huge protest in Lisbon

A large-scale mobilisation across Europe is taking place today to alert the European leaders that the time for a change in course has already come. The day will take various forms in more than 20 countries: from simultaneous strikes through demonstrations to open forums and political and media action.
In Portugal and Spain a 24 hour general strike is in progress, the first Iberian strike in History.

Palace Of Belém

Official residence of the President of the Portuguese Republic, Lisbon

Actually this place looks very different today because of security measures in order not to let the crowd of protesters get near the palace: German Chancellor Angela Merkel, the "Queen of Austerity", is having a meeting with the President.

"Culture Is Resistance"

Three more different protest events against new cuts and more taxes - which will be impossible to pay! - announced by this government for 2013 took place in Lisbon yesterday (as well as in other cities from north to south). People simply can't take any more austerity, this country's economy will be ruined soon.
This time I decided to support culture as it has never been so neglected as it is now. I took this shot when the Portuguese Symphony Orchestra was performing. Writers, poets, actors, movie directors, dancers, musicians, singers, bands have raised their voices on this stage.

Culture is the people's soul

By the way,
Exactly when an economic war is going on in the Euro zone and just one country is in command, when the EU shows total incapacity for dealing with the crisis, when some governments are fighting their own people, the Swedish Academy decided to award the European Union with the Nobel Peace Prize.

P.S.  It's Norway that gives out the Peace Prize and Sweden gives out the other Nobel Prizes. Thank you, Ladyfi.

Art Nouveau

A store front conversion of a 18th century building took place in 1908 when Animatógrafo do Rossio opened doors for the Lisboners to watch movies.
A century later the sex business controls the place and peep shows is all you can watch there now.

The theatre was built on the site of the old Estaus Palace(*) between 1842 and 1846. A fire would partially destroy the building in 1964 and it took fourteen years to reopen doors.

(*)built around 1450, it became the seat of the Inquisition in the 16th century; the palace survived the 1755 Great Earthquake but it was destroyed by a fire in 1836

The Roman Galleries

The galleries found underneath Rua da Prata (Silver Street) in downtown Lisbon are estimated to have been built in the 1st century AD, during the peak of the Roman Empire. Over the centuries, the Roman structures on the surface crumbled or were replaced by new buildings. However, newer buildings were continuously constructed on the pre-existing Roman foundations.
This cryptoporticus was discovered after the 1755 Great Earthquake.
Public access is only possible 3 days a year after pumping out all the water accumulated over the entire year and the installation of lights (video). Water pumps continue work until the monument is once again closed to the public due to the significant rate of water seepage.
